Runny Noise

📖 Project: (Since 2018) Runny Noise is a concert blending beatmaking—using sounds from the real world—with live music played in surround sound.
The group was born from the meeting of JB Juszczak and Romain Muller and their desire to compose music using fragments of soundscapes gathered over more than a decade of travel. From north to south, the collected atmospheres fuel an emotionally intense musical experience where the musicians respond to the rumors of waves and shout in unison with a city under construction. Sounds intertwine in a “musique concrete” style production with world music and hip-hop influences—a contrasting, bustling, nomadic soundscape.

⚙ Setup: (sound engineering, design, and composition) Object-based mixing using Spat Revolution software and around ten speakers surrounding the audience (depending on venue capacity).

📰 Press review:
« This highly dense show—where technology is used as a musical instrument—explores multiple sonic universes. The work on “musique concrete” elements is simply phenomenal; it avoids technical showing-off—such as swirling sounds in every direction for no reason other than to demonstrate software capabilities. Each universe is constructed like a movie soundtrack, blending atmospheres, musicalized sound textures, and concrete musical content. »

Les Violons Barbares at E.M.A. Geneva

📖 Project: Violons Barbares are composed by two violinists—Dandarvaanchig Enkhjargal (Mongolia) and Dimitar Gougov (Bulgaria)—and the percussionist Fabien Guyot (France). The Mongolian musician plays the traditional “morin khuur” (a two-stringed violin from his country, topped with a horse’s head), while the Bulgarian plays the “gadulka”, an instrument featuring three melodic strings and eleven sympathetic strings. And percussionist, plays whatever can produce a sound—ranging from African or North African drums to salad bowls and hot-water bottles.
Wonderfully performed, their energetic music sweeps us away to vast, distant lands. World music, folk, Kazakh blues, electric rock. Wild!

Opera « Don Giovani inferno » by Simon Steen Anderson

📖 Project: (April & May 2024) (Arets Reumert Award winner) A work that is simultaneously a lyrical fiction—following a Mozart character as he dive into what turns out to be the underworld of opera—and a psychedelic dream unfolding in the mind of an opera singer after he bangs his head against a trapdoor.
In this hell side of opera, we cross 400 years of history, guided by the « Opera Devil » Polistopheles—an embodiment of all the Mephistopheles, Plutos, and other historical demons—followed by the damned, villains, and other infernal figures from the repertoire. We also explore the dark, hidden corners of the opera house through video excursions, using backstage footage as virtual scenery.

Stefania Becheanu

📖 Project: Stefania Becheanu is a sound artist and « indisciplinary » performer. Drawing on a threefold approach—sonic, visual, and physical—her multi-media works stand at the intersection of contemporary, experimental, and improvised music, field recording, and visual arts, while also flirting with contemporary dance. Her aim is to break down the boundaries between forms and genres, promote emancipation through art, and explore the concept of active, empathetic listening, allowing emotion and shared vibration to emerge.

« Prophétie imaginaire » at Les Dominicains de Haute Alsace.

📖 Project: (Summer 2021) A sonic, pagan wizard, guitarist Kalevi Uibo casts a strange sort of incantation born from the unlikely meeting of an electric guitar, a Russian synthesizer, and obscure traditional instruments.
What if we allowed ourselves to open the doors to the imagination? That act of oiling a fictional lock, pushing a metaphorical door, and hovering on the threshold of this geographical, architectural, and symbolic opening… Is it possible? And what will we find there, anyway? Emptiness? Its opposite?
« Imagination finds more reality in what is hidden than in what is revealed. »
Moving thru this digression by Gaston Bachelard, Kalevi Uibo—guitarist (among other things) and, above all, a protean musician—seeks the hidden within the light, shelter within the darkness, and the conceptual within the descent.

« Tombés dans l’oreille d’un son »

📖 Project: (2013) An immersive concert titled « Tombés dans l’oreille d’un son, » held at the Espace Malraux in Geispolsheim and the Strasbourg Conservatory as part of « La Semaine du Son ». The nomadic musician Jean-Baptiste Juszczak; while he was out, searching for traditional repertoires with his portable recorder, decided to start a « sonic archaeological dig. »
The aim was to create a performance based on audio recordings captured during various journeys over the course of a year—traveling the roads of the Balkans (Macedonia and Bulgaria), the countryside of India, and across France and Alsace. There was a lot of reasons to pull out the microphone: {You encounter sawyers, engravers, sharpeners, stone breakers, chickens, cats, monkeys, artists, laughter and tears, Erol, Pecho, Immam, trains, boats, trash cans, wind and fire, people of all kinds… }
